Ar Gefn Y Ddraig
The Berghaus Dragons Back Race is the hardest 5-day mountain race in the world! Therefore when I found out that my friend, Huw Jack Brassington (one of the craziest people I know), was planning on running it, I knew that this was going to be a great opportunity for me to make my first documentary.

Up to Speed
When climbing was announced as part of the 2020 Olympics, it was a monumental occasion for the sport. But many climbers were shocked to learn that one of three combined events required to compete for a medal is… speed climbing. REEL ROCK correspondent Zachary Barr looks into this little-known and seldom practiced sub-discipline of the sport, and the role it will play in shaping climbing’s future. Barr’s journey from the U.S. to France (the birthplace of modern speed climbing) to South Asia (it’s actually huge there) culminates at an international competition in Moscow, where speed demons race up a 15-meter wall in less than six seconds.

In this second episode, we tell the story of Jamie Foy’s fantastical freestyle with a standard stair-set and its surreal double life, all set to the voice of 1979 Skater of the Year, Steve Olson. Floe State
While we thrive on following adrenaline fuelled adventures, this opportunity to take some time and embrace the peace and tranquility that Gilly experiences in her time ice swimming was a true pleasure. A Mile An Hour
Packing on the pounds after writing a PhD, Beau’s running again. He’s also back in the shed; fixing stuff, making things, tinkering. For most of us, running was once a form of survival, hunting- or being hunted. Now, it can be as meaningful, or meaningless, than any other aspect of life. Running for Beau is practical- it gets him places, yet like a lot of runners, it's deeply embodied. He defines himself by where his feet take him, thinking about his other forms of life as he runs. Combining a need to get rid of the gut, to run again, and spend some quality time in the shed, Beau will run a mile an hour around his perfectly mile-long block. In between he’ll do as much as possible, likely becoming the fullest, meaningful, most trivial day of Beau’s life.

Every weekend through the winter, a group of middle-aged men, who dub themselves the East German Ladies Swimming Team, plunge into the freezing waters of a pond in central London. 'The Home for Broken Toys' follows the team through one season to explore their motivations for braving the extreme cold each week, a decision which seems alien to the filmmaker. Beau Miles lives next to the old Warragul-Noojee Railway line, which snaked for 43km through the foothills of Mt. Baw Baw, and ran from 1892-1954. Overgrown, private, exposed, or hard to find, Beau aims to re-run the train line, picking up and finding the stations of yesteryear.

Final Ascent
The legend of Hamish MacInnes began early. At 16 he climbed the Matterhorn. At 17 he built his first motor car – from scratch. He attempted Everest in 1953 with his friend Johnny Cunningham, and almost stole the peak before Hillary and Tenzing. As an explorer, expedition leader and engineer he achieved world fame. As inventor of the all metal ice axe, author of the International Mountain Rescue Handbook and founder of Glencoe Mountain Rescue he has been responsible for saving hundreds of lives, if not thousands. But at the age of 84, his accomplishments could not save him from being institutionalised against his will, suffering from delirium. After a spell in psychogeriatric detainment in a hospital in the Highlands of Scotland, during which he made many escape attempts – he emerged to find his memory gone. This film tells the story of his life by mirroring his greatest challenge: to recover his memories and rescue himself.

Gravitas
We worked with a very precise plan on some of the most incredible Calisthenic Street Workout Scenes with the Australian Calisthenic Athlete “Simonster” on the streets. With Simon Ata we shot straight Bodyweight power moves all over the state of Saxony. He is a master of the Plance and Handstand and the Hollowback, but also other moves like a super high backflip and Hollowback which is one of his special moves. On the music I worked with the composer Oliver Patrice Weder from Amsterdam. I flew over and we composed to every move of Simonster and to the dynamic of the shot. It is also the first time I used no Invisible Cuts or other Effect Editing and worked with longer, magical shots. We shot 7 days with breaks inbetween to get to the result you see in the end. This is a free project supported by the state I am living in. (Soundtrack was created by Oliver Patrice Weder )

Son's Gonna Rise
For Ethan and Andrew Shandro, time in the outdoors has always revolved around riding bikes. Of course, when your dad is a two-time World Cup winner and a freeride legend, it’s not surprising to learn that the bike would play a huge role in shaping Ethan’s youth. But that’s not the point here. The point is that you don’t have to be one of the world’s best mountain bikers to have an amazing experience with your kids in the woods. You just gotta go into those woods with your kids and then good things will happen. After all, there’s no better way to nurture a relationship than time spent outside. And maybe one day... your little shredder will be leaving you in their dust.
