The Dawn Wall

Josh Lowell, Peter Mortimer

In January, 2015, American rock climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson captivated the world with their effort to climb The Dawn Wall, a seemingly impossible 3,000 foot rock face in Yosemite National Park, California. The pair lived on the sheer vertical cliff for weeks, igniting a frenzy of global media attention. But for Tommy Caldwell, The Dawn Wall was much more than just a climb. It was the culmination of a lifetime defined by overcoming obstacles. At the age of 22, the climbing prodigy was taken hostage by rebels in Kyrgyzstan. Shortly after, he lost his index finger in an accident, but resolved to come back stronger. When his marriage fell apart, he escaped the pain by fixating on the extraordinary goal of free climbing The Dawn Wall. Blurring the line between dedication and obsession, Caldwell and his partner Jorgeson spend six years meticulously plotting and practicing their route. On the final attempt, with the world watching, Caldwell is faced with a moment of truth. Should he abandon his partner to fulfill his ultimate dream, or risk his own success for the sake of their friendship?

Treeline

Quietly, patiently, trees endure. They are the oldest living beings we come to know during our time on earth. They provide our shelter, our fuel, our companions, and—in some cases—our divinity. They are living bridges into our planet’s enormous past, their obscure stories written into their rings over centuries and even millennia. Treeline takes us to the enshrined cypress groves of Japan, the towering redcedars of British Columbia, and the ancient bristlecones of Nevada, following a handful of skiers, snowboarders, scientists and healers as they move through these giants and explore a connection older than humanity.

The Weight of Water is the story of a blind adventurer taking on an absurdly improbable challenge, kayaking the Grand Canyon. He desires the elusive state of being that so many of us seek, to be engaged in the present moment.

"It's so hard to be fully in the moment because there's so much fear, there's so much anxiety, it's like a person looking through a window at an experience rather than being in the experience." -- Erik Weihenmayer.

8000+

Antoine Girad, Christian Schmidt

In July 2016, the paraglider Antoine Girard set off on a three-week hike-and- y tour to explore the Karakorum mountains in Pakistan— alone. From the town of Skardu, he heads for the highest peaks of the Karakorum mountain range. The Frenchman has already twice failed in his attempts to climb the 8,051-meter-high Broad Peak and paraglide from the summit down into the valley. Now, his hope is that the upwinds will carry him and his chute to the summit—and possibly beyond. If he succeeds, he will set a new altitude record in paragliding, but the air is thin between the 8,000-meter peaks, and take-offs and landings are extremely tricky. Especially when you only have one person to rely on—yourself.

Finding The Line

Bjarne Salén

FINDING THE LINE is a film about fear, it’s paralyzing grip on humans and how it affects our decision-making.

Olympian and X Games Slopestyle champion Anna Segal and her Freeride World Tour, big mountain skiing sister, Nat Segal, use their skiing to understand fear and how it manifests in the two siblings’ lives.

Throughout their careers as professional skiers, Anna and Nat have both constantly been challenged by fear. Yet, despite being brought up under the same roof, they have learned to deal with it in almost contrasting ways, neither leading them to the success they dreamed of.

A heartfelt journey on the knife’s edge of big mountains throughout Canada and France push them to their physical and emotional limits. The extreme skiing mecca of Alaska pushes them beyond.

The Australian sisters soon realise that the most important lessons lie within each others' approach. Equipped with greater insight, they negotiate the fine balance between staying in their comfort zone and taking too much risk, learning that sometimes to move forward, you need to understand what is holding you back.

The Bikes of Wrath

Cameron Ford, Charlie Turnbull

Five Australian friends attempt to cycle 1600 miles from Oklahoma to California in honor of the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s. The Bikes of Wrath is a story of adventure, human connection and an in-depth look at inequality and disenfranchisement in today's America through the lens of Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning novel, 'The Grapes of Wrath'.SYNOPSIS:The Bikes of Wrath tells the story of five Australian friends as they attempt to cycle from Oklahoma to California in honor of the mighty westward migration undertaken by ‘The Grapes of Wrath’s’ Joad family.Seeking to gain a greater understanding of the Dust Bowl, explore the central themes of the novel and discuss their relevance in today’s America, the Bikes of Wrath set-out on their 30-day cycling adventure with no support vehicle, no training and, as one member puts it best: ‘no real idea.’Loaded with trailers, musical instruments and camera equipment, the group set themselves the additional challenge of surviving off $420 (the modern-day equivalent of the Joads’ $18 in the 1930s) and whatever their musical performances can yield.Through chance encounters with everyday Americans, the cyclists expand on the novel’s core themes: migration, inequality and the perceived land of opportunity. The group explores whether America has progressed since the book was written, discussing the wealth gap, immigration and the American Dream.Letting the cyclists into their homes, lives, and demonstrating the startling parallels of The Grapes of Wrath seventy-eight years after its publication, these vastly different small-town characters quickly become the central focus of the documentary, as well as integral to the success of the groups’ journey. The Bikes of Wrath uncovers a deep insight into the human spirit and shines a positive light on America at a time when the world needs it most; all rolled into a unique, funny and life-affirming observational documentary filled with adventure, literature, music, and human connection.

This Mountain Life

Grant Baldwin

The awe that mountainous landscapes evoke is universal, yet few of us ever venture into true wilderness. Living amongst us is a special breed of people. They are undefined by age, gender, profession or background, but for them, the draw of the mountains is so strong that their lives must revolve around it
Martina and her 60 year-old mother Tania embark on a 6 month, 2300km journey to Alaska through a relentless mountain wilderness; a group of nuns inhabiting a mountain retreat to be closer to God; a photographer is buried in an avalanche; an impassioned alpinist; a focused snow artist; a couple who has been living off grid in the mountains for nearly 50 years. What is it that leads these adventurous people to sacrifice everything – comfort, family, personal safety – for a life in the mountains? Shot in cinematic detail, This Mountain Life is a riveting portrait of human passion set high in the peaks of the Coast Range.
